The Science Behind the Best Running Pre-Workout

If you want a pre-workout for running, check what is in it and whether it contains caffeine. Knowing the ingredients helps you choose a formula for your training.

We first shared this article about our caffeine-free Fortify VO2MAX in December 2024. Here is a look at the current formula and the research on its ingredients.

What is in Fortify VO2MAX?

Our current Fortify VO2MAX formula contains peppermint oil, Alpha-GPC, acetyl L-carnitine, MCT oil, grape seed extract and glycerol. It is caffeine-free, with a peppermint taste and a subtle lemon-lime flavour.

Our original article focused on Alpha-GPC and peppermint oil. Here is what each ingredient does and what researchers have tested.

What does the research tell us?

Alpha-GPC is a source of choline, which your body uses to make a chemical that carries signals between nerves and muscles.

In a small Alpha-GPC strength study, 13 young men took 600 mg a day for six days. They improved in a test of how hard they could pull against a fixed bar using their legs.

A small study of peppermint oil and exercise tested 12 men before and after ten days of taking peppermint oil. The men ran for longer on the treadmill and improved on breathing tests.

What is VO2 max?

VO2 max is the most oxygen your body can use during hard exercise. It is one way to measure your fitness. Your pace also depends on how well you run, how you fuel and how you manage the effort.

Choosing a caffeine-free option

If you train in the evening or want to keep caffeine low, a caffeine-free formula may suit your routine. You can also read our guide to counting your daily caffeine before choosing a pre-workout.

Keep your training, food, fluids and rest at the centre of your plan. If you try a new supplement, follow its label and try it in training before race day.
